Teaching Lab
Promoting innovative teaching
At the end of its funding period, the DDLitLab can look back on the successful implementation of a pioneering initiative: In the first two one‑year funding rounds, a total of 35 innovative teaching projects were supported across all faculties of the university. In these projects, digital and hybrid teaching innovations with a strong focus on Data Literacy were developed, whether in cross‑disciplinary courses, discipline‑specific modules, or transfer‑oriented formats. The initiative pursued the goal of sustainably integrating Data Literacy as a key competence into curricula and creating space for instructors to implement their creative teaching ideas in a methodologically sound way.
With the third funding round, the initiative was further developed for the winter semester 2024/2025 in close collaboration with the Hub of Computing & Data Science (HCDS): the Data Literacy Teaching Lab approach evolved into the Cross‑Disciplinary Teaching Lab (CDTL), within which 10 initiatives were funded. This connection enables even stronger interdisciplinary collaboration and pedagogical‑technological development through integration into the educational ecosystem “Data Literacy Education.” Across all three funding rounds—with 14 Teaching Lab projects in the first round, 21 in the second, and 10 CDTLs in the third—an impressive diversity of 45 innovative teaching initiatives emerged, anchoring Data Literacy in teaching both within and across disciplines.
In addition to the teaching projects and building on the DLE network, a vibrant DDLitLab Fellow network has been established in the course of the initiative. This network promotes exchange and collaboration among teachers and focuses on digital and data-related teaching content and digital didactic formats. Understanding the conditions of digital transformation as an opportunity for further development and a challenge to existing structures is a common denominator for many subjects, departments, and disciplines at the UHH.
- Freedom for innovative, unconventional teaching through teaching lab support
- Peer coaching and exchange of results/experiences between different generations of fellows
- Sustainable consolidation of teaching formats, materials, and offerings
- Didactic support (improvement of digital teaching skills) through fellow workshops and teaching concept workshops
- Regular networking formats and community building
